One of the biggest misconceptions about GLP-1 medications—and even bariatric surgery—is that they offer an “easier” way to lose weight. But after nearly a decade of coaching clients through both, I can confidently say that there is no easy way to lose weight.
Since 2015, I’ve worked with people who were several years post-bariatric surgery, those preparing for surgery, and now, many individuals taking GLP-1 medications like semaglutide and Wegovy. Each path comes with its own unique set of challenges.
The Hidden Challenges of Bariatric Surgery
For those choosing bariatric surgery, the journey starts long before the actual procedure:
- Pre-surgery requirements: Many people need to follow a protein-sparing modified fast to lose at least 10% of their body weight.
- High costs and recovery: There’s the expense of the surgery, the procedure itself, and the 6-8 week recovery period.
- Post-surgery diet: Afterward, you’ll follow a highly restrictive diet, starting with liquid protein shakes before gradually reintroducing solid foods.
- Emotional eating struggles: A surprising side effect? Many people who were emotional eaters before surgery may turn to alcohol as an alternative coping mechanism. Post-surgery, it takes far less alcohol to become intoxicated, making it an easy (but risky) substitute for the emotional comfort food once provided.
Why GLP-1 Medications Aren’t the “Easy Way Out”
When it comes to GLP-1 medications like compounded semaglutide, people often say, “Oh, that’s just the easy way out.” But from coaching many clients on these medications, I can tell you that’s far from the truth.
GLP-1 medications force rapid habit changes, whether or not you’re ready for them. Here are just a few of the challenges my clients face:
- Food intolerance: If you love high-fat foods, suddenly those same meals might make you extremely sick while on this medication.
- Insurance hurdles: Getting insurance coverage can be difficult, and paying out of pocket isn’t affordable for many people.
- Uncertainty about long-term use: You may worry about whether you’ll be able to stay on the medication if your insurance changes or the medication becomes unavailable.
- Side effects: Stomach upset, vomiting, and diarrhea are common side effects that can feel overwhelming.
- Changing your relationship with food: Your connection to food—which you’ve built over decades—is being forced to change quickly, and that emotional shift can be tough.
- Habit change is still necessary: Even with GLP-1 medications, habit change and calorie awareness are critical for long-term success.
There is no easy way to lose weight. Every approach, whether it’s bariatric surgery, GLP-1 medications, or traditional dieting, comes with its own set of challenges. The sooner we can let go of the idea that there’s a quick fix, the better off we’ll be.
I believe that different methods can be beneficial for different people at various phases of life. While I see great benefits in GLP-1 medications, I also see misinformation, glamorization, and unrealistic expectations surrounding them—especially on social media.
